Celebrating Highlights

An amazing writing mentor Hallee Adelman introduced me to the wonderful world of the Highlights Foundation. I was so blessed to be a scholarship recipient. It has led me to start work on my first middle-grade novel!

My First Podcast

I had a great time chatting with Jed on his podcast, Reading With Your Kids! Click to visit the site and hear about our adventures in reading, language, and origami.

Hello, I'm Marie!

After attending the San Diego Writers Conference in 2019 the missing piece had fallen into place for Marie. As much as she loved her expatriate life overseas, she knew it was time to move back to America and work towards becoming a published author. With a suitcase full of ideas and two COVID-canceled flights under her belt, the journey was begun.

Cosmopolitan life defines Marie in many ways. Born in Hong Kong, raised in New York City, and a resident of Shanghai for over a decade, the unique characters and neon lights of the “Big City” are where she derives much of her inspiration. When she needs to escape, she retreats into nature where she ogles at trees, sings with birds, and talks back to chatty squirrels. Despite her conversations with creatures, Marie’s primary writing focus is not on animals but on her people and the deep power of their culture. She proudly tells tales of the grit, tenacity, and compassion of the Asian people.

Marie develops her craft through webinars, blogs, and any course she can get her hands on. During the time she taught literacy to kindergarteners, she recognized the correlation between childhood literacy and reading aloud to children. She is dedicated to spreading this message to parents and caregivers.

A long, long time ago, Marie graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a B.F.A. in Communication Design after which she dabbled in the "real world" as a gas station attendant, a cocktail waitress at Studio 54, secretary to B-list actors, Manhattan real estate agent, and whatnot, until becoming a teacher.

Reviews

"With its poetic language and beautiful imagery, this story of immigration and connection through play is a worthwhile addition to most collections."
- School Library Journal

"Most children will be able to identify with Yuna, as most have experienced a time in which they have been unable to communicate with someone yet were finally able to bridge that gap with a game or a shared interest. The message is powerful and the illustrations complement the story well. . . . Recommended."
- School Library Connection

Author Visit

Yuna’s Cardboard Castles is about a young girl who uses origami and the language of play to bridge the language barrier and build new friendships. The story covers important socio-emotional issues related to the Asian American experience and the challenges of moving to a new place… the perfect complement to AAPI activities.

Whether you have students from foreign countries or would like to broaden your cohorts’ understanding of other cultures, this Author Visit will cover it all. As a bonus, students will get to create an origami piece of their own, huge in the world of STEM right now as NASA launches origami satellites into space for the very first time!

Here’s what I’ll cover on my visit:
• Yuna’s Cardboard Castles Read Aloud
• Q&A and Book Chat
• Show & Tell Origami
• Small group origami boat folding
• Book signing

My fee is $800 for a one-day author visit in the Charlotte, NC area. This includes a maximum of four presentations and lunch with the students or teachers. (*please contact me for rates outside of Charlotte)
